1. Mạo từ “a/an”

Chúng ta sử dụng mạo từ “a/an” trước danh từ số ít, chưa xác định, xuất hiện lần đầu tiên trong câu miêu tả.

- a: dùng trước danh từ bắt đầu bằng phụ âm

- an: dùng trước danh từ bắt đầu bằng nguyên âm

Ví dụ:

Can you give me an example of an English-speaking country?

(Bạn có thể cho tôi một ví dụ của một quốc gia nói tiếng Anh không?)

Canada is a very cold country.

(Canada là một đất nước rất lạnh.)

2. Mạo từ “the”

Chúng ta sử dụng “the”

- với so sánh nhất

Ví dụ: The largest city in Australia is Sydney.

(Thành phố lớn nhất ở Úc là Sydney.)

- với tên của một số địa danh

Ví dụ: My son is studying in the USA.

(Con trai tôi đang học ở Mỹ.)

- nếu một trong các từ trong tên địa danh đó là danh từ chung (đảo, cầu, sông, tháp,…)

Ví dụ: The Tower Bridge in London is over one hundred years old.

(Cầu Tháp ở London hơn 100 tuổi.)

3. Không sử dụng mạo từ

- với một số tên quốc gia

Ví dụ: Scotland is a part of the UK.

(Scotland là một phần của vương quốc Anh.)

- với tên tiểu bang, tỉnh, thành phố

Ví dụ: The Statue of Liberty is in New York.

(Tượng nữ thần tự do ở New York.)
