Methane-catching masks for cows

1. __________

There are more than one billion cows in the world, and cow farming is a large source of methane emissions. This colourless and odourless gas is much more powerful than CO2 at warming the earth.

2. __________

Farmers and companies are developing solutions for decreasing cows’ methane emissions. In Canada and Brazil, farmers started adding a special ingredient to their animals’ feed to reduce cows’ methane production. In New Zealand, scientists are working on a vaccine that can cut methane emissions. Rather than stopping methane emissions, a UK company has designed face masks to catch the gas before it is released.

3. __________

The masks will allow cows to continue their normal diet, but will turn methane into CO2 and water. They can fit comfortably on the cow’s head and can be adjusted to different head sizes. Sensors on the masks can notice when methane comes out of the cow’s mouth and provide the percentage of the gas. This information can also be useful for farmers who can use it to identify the early signs of disease. For example, if a cow eats less, but produces more methane than usual, it may have a health problem.

4. __________

It is predicted that the need for beef and dairy products will go up in the coming years. The company developing the methane-catching masks hopes that farmers will start using their invention, which will slow down global warming.

(Mặt nạ bắt khí metan cho bò

1. Listen and read.

(Nghe và đọc.)

Mr Quang: Good morning, class. Today’s lesson will start with Mai and Nam’s talk about some of the causes and consequences of global warming. Would you like to go first, Mai?

Mai: Yes, thank you. First, let me remind you what global warming refers to - it’s the increase in the earth's temperature because of certain gases in the atmosphere.

Nam: Exactly. These gases are mainly produced through human activities. For example, burnt for energy, fossil fuels release large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Mr Quang: But how do these gases make the earth warmer?

Mai: Well, they act like the glass in a greenhouse. Trapping too much of the sun’s heat, they stop it from escaping back into space. This makes the planet hotter and hotter.

Nam: That's right. That’s why these heat-trapping pollutants are known as greenhouse gases, and their impact is called the greenhouse effect.

Mai: Global warming is also linked to rising sea levels. As temperatures rise, polar ice caps melt faster, adding more water to oceans. Higher sea levels can also lead to floods.

Nam: Each year, the consequences of global warming become more serious, and its negative impact on the environment and people gets stronger.

Mr Quang: Good job! Thank you for sharing the information.

A. History of COPs

B. Main causes of global warming

C. Main goals of this year’s COP

In 1994, the UN decided to bring together world leaders for an annual event, known as COP or ‘Conference of Parties’, to discuss climate change. This year’s conference will review what has been achieved and discuss the key goals.

The first goal is to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5°C. This will require reducing global CO, emissions by 50 per cent by 2030, and by 2050 achieving a balance between the greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere and those removed from it.

The second goal is to reduce the use of coal, whichis the dirtiest fuel and biggest source of planet-warming CO2 emissions. Countries will have to stop building new coal plants and switch to clean sources of energy.

The third goal is to end deforestation. Forests remove CO2 from the atmosphere and slow global warming. But when they are cut down or burnt, they release the carbon stored in the trees into the atmosphere as CO2. Stopping deforestation is, therefore, an effective solution to climate change.

The last key goal is to reduce methane emissions. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is more powerful than CO2 at warming the earth. It is responsible for nearly one-third of current warming from human activities. Methane comes from farming activities and landfill waste. The production and use of coal, oil, and natural gas also release methane.

This conference is very important because this is the best last chance we have to slow global warming. World leaders, climate experts, organisations, and national representatives will carefully discuss these goals and agree on how to make global progress on climate change.

REDUCING THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF FARMING

Farming provides us with the food that we eat every day. But farming activities also have a strong warming impact on the global temperature. The good news is that experts have already started thinking about how to reduce it.

Raising farm animals like cows, goats, and sheep makes the planet hotter. There are billions of them and they release methane, a greenhouse gas that is much more dangerous than carbon dioxide. That is why scientists are developing methane-catching face masks for cows. They are intended to reduce methane emissions by up to 50 per cent per cow.

Another farming activity that heats the atmosphere is growing rice. According to research, emissions from rice farms have the same warming effect as about 600 coal plants. Flooded rice fields also make it easier for soil bacteria to produce greenhouse gases. New farming methods have allowed rice to grow well in drier fields, limit the amount of greenhouse gases, use less water, and produce better crops.

In addition, land-use increases the global temperature. Plants and trees use CO2 to grow and store large amounts of carbon underground. Cutting down or burning forests to create farm fields and land for feeding animals releases tonnes of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Luckily, many countries and world leaders have agreed to protect the forests and end deforestation.

In short, there are some positive signs that farmers can meet the environmental challenges. However, although the impact of farming on the global temperature has been reduced, there is still much to do.

The Truth about Global Warming

More and more teenagers are worried about the environment. Teen World takes a look at the biggest environmental problem facing our world.

Teens everywhere are re becoming more in more interested in ponment. The main issue today is global warming. It's caused by the increase of greenhouse gases, which keep the heat from the sun in the air. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the most common greenhouse gases. It's mostly caused by burning fossil fuels. We consume fossil fuels for our transportation and the energy in our homes. Deforestation is another human activity that only makes global warming worse. Trees remove greenhouse gases from the air, so we need to protect the forests.

What can we do? First of all, in order to reduce greenhouse gases, we should shut down coal and of power plants. We should switch to more sustainable kinds of energy, such as wind and solar power, even if they cost more. Instead of gas, we could switch to using biofuels, which are made from plants and other living things. Secondly, we should prohibit cars and motorbikes from downtown areas and increase the tax on gas to make it more expensive to use them. Using more electric vehicles, especially electric buses, is another good idea.

Protecting our forests and planting more trees are both very important. It's hard to stop farmers from cutting down trees, so governments have to make strong laws to protect forests.

There are many things we can do at home to help. We can all help save energy at home by turning off the lights and also switching to energy-saving devices.

These are the solutions we can use to stop global warming. We can still save our planet if people act now.

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is William Thombury, and I am a journalist for the Hickleton Herald Newspaper. I am researching for an article about the hydroelectric dam in Hickleton. I am writing to ask for more information about the project.

I would like to know how long the project is going to take. There are many unemployed people in Hickleton, and more jobs would help a lot. People would be happy to hear that the project will finish quickly, and jobs will be available soon.

Could you also tell me about its environmental impact? Dams require a reservoir to be made, and the water of a river has to be redirected. The local people would be happy to hear that it will not cause much environmental damage.

I would also appreciate you telling me about how electricity prices may change. The prices are very high here. It would be great to report that the prices will decrease.

Finally, I would like to know about how the dam will look. Hickleton is a very beautiful town, and people travel here for tourism. People want to know that the dam will not make fewer people want to travel here.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully.

Read the text about pollution in Sutterton. Choose the correct answer (A, B, C, or D).

(Đọc văn bản về ô nhiễm ở Sutterton. Chọn câu trả lời đúng (A, B, C hoặc D).)

Pollution in Sutterton

The air quality in Sutterton has decreased a lot over the past ten years. In this report, I will give details to show why it has decreased and give suggestions on how it can be improved.

First, the overall CO2 (1) __________ have increased by 19% since 2012. That is an increase of over 25,000 tonnes of CO2. This is partly due to three new factories opening in 2015. (2) ____________ 2015 to 2016, emission increased by 13%. The other cause is having around 8% more vehicles on the road. This is likely due to the increased transportation needed for the factories. The second reason for the decreased air quality is the increase in deforestation Since 2012, it has increased (3) ____________ over 300,000 hectares. From 2012 to 2016, it only increased by about 50,000 hectares. However, since 2017, it has increased by over 250,000 hectares.

I have three suggestions to improve the air quality. I believe (4) _____________ a solar power station outside of town will help a lot. Next, banning deforestation will help keep the trees you have left. Finally, (5) ______________. The tax on fuel should help reduce the amount of vehicles on the road.

In conclusion, the air quality in Sutterton has decreased significantly over the past ten years. This is due to both increased CO2 emissions and deforestation. I believe building a solar power station, banning deforestation, and increasing tax on fuel will greatly improve the air quality.

How to protect our ecosystems

A. Global warming and deforestation are destroying our valuable ecosystems and harming the animals and plants that live in them. There are many things we can do to stop these problems and protect the Earth's ecosystems.

B. Firstly, we must try to use only energy-saving products. For example, we should use electric cars and everyday products like refrigerators and televisions that are energy- saving. These products don't use a lot of electricity that produces greenhouse gases. In this way, we reduce greenhouse gas emissions that harm ecosystems.

C. Another way to protect our ecosystems is to plant trees. The more trees we have, the more we can cut down on the CO2 already in the air. By doing this, we reduce global warming and its harmful effects on the environment.

D. In conclusion, we can help protect our ecosystems by taking many important actions such as using energy- saving products and planting trees. Our actions can make a difference and make our planet a better place to live.

1. Read the article about the solutions to global warming. Then tick () the specific ideas mentioned in the article.

(Đọc bài viết về các giải pháp cho sự nóng lên toàn cầu. Sau đó đánh dấu () vào các ý cụ thể được đề cập trong bài viết.)

Here are some ways to help reduce global warming. Which of these do you regularly do?

Don't use private cars. Your willingness to walk or cycle to nearby places can help reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide and also reduce your own carbon footprint.

Use public transport. If travelling long distances, then use public transport rather than your car. However, if you carpool (travel together with a group of people in one car), then you are choosing to help the environment. If we travel with others, we will use less petrol.

Make a decision to reduce, recycle, and reuse. Reduce waste by buying reusable products. Don't forget to recycle plastics, glass, and paper products. You may wish to reuse some of your old items to help out, too. Take unneeded items to a recycling centre.

Plant trees. Plants and trees are nature's lungs. They produce the oxygen we breathe. They also can shade your home, thus making it cooler so you don't need to run your air conditioners as much.

Change air conditioner filters regularly. This simple step will save about 160 kilos of carbon dioxide and may save you up to $150 a year. Making a choice to go green will save you money and help the environment.

Buy local goods. When you buy goods imported from far-away places, it takes a lot of energy to transport them to your area. This means that if you don't buy local food and products, then more emissions of carbon dioxide will happen during the transportation process.

1. Buy a bicycle

2. Buy things made in your area

3. Carpool with your friends

4. Change your air conditioner filter

5. Use hot water

6. Help the environment by riding a bike or using public transport

The glass walls of the greenhouse trap the Sun's heat so that it cannot escape. At nighttime, it's colder outside, but the greenhouse stays warm inside because of the trapped heat. The temperature inside the greenhouse is essential for plants to grow. This is called the greenhouse effect.

The natural warming process on Earth works much the same way. During the day, the Sun shines into the Earth's atmosphere. Gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide, trap the Sun's heat. These heat-trapping gases are called greenhouse gases. At night, the Earth cools down, releasing heat back into the air. Some of the heat passes through the atmosphere into the space, but most of it is captured by the greenhouse gases. This is the mechanism that keeps our Earth a warm and cozy place with the temperature of 58 degrees Fahrenheit (14 degrees Celsius), on average. Without heat-trapping greenhouse gases, according to scientists, the average global surface temperature would drop to -18°C.

This greenhouse effect is crucial to keeping the Earth a comfortable place to live. Today, however, the greenhouse effects are worsening because human's activities are contributing to an increasing temperature of the Earth. This is known as global warming.

Viet Nam Likely to Face Extreme Weather Conditions by 2050

Viet Nam is likely to continue facing extreme weather conditions such as higher temperatures, lower summer rainfalls, stronger storms, and rising sea levels from now to 2050. Temperatures in northern Viet Nam will rise by between 0.83 degrees Celsius by 2050 and continue its uptrend during the late 21st century. Summer rainfall will decline in most areas. Meanwhile, storms may become rarer but fiercer, causing possible flash floods and landslides in flood-prone areas of northern mountainous, central and central highland provinces. The forecasts suggest sea level rises of 100mm - 400mm along the entire Vietnamese coast by the end of the 21st century, affecting marine biodiversity and coastal communities. The experts emphasize the unpredictability of climate change and its potential impacts to create a variety of dangerous extreme weather events in the future. To raise the public awareness of climate change impacts, the Vietnamese government urges concerned agencies to work together on devising worst-case scenario models and responses by 2020 and calls on international experts to further support Viet Nam in climate change adaptation. Climate change is a real threat to Viet Nam’s socio-economic development. If sea levels rose one meter, five percent of the country’s land, eleven percent of its population and seven percent of its farmland would be affected.

Question: By 2050, Viet Nam continues facing all of these extreme weather conditions EXCEPT _______.

Climate change has affected wild animals and plants all over the world, but some species are more endangered than others. Polar animals, whose icy habitat is melting in the warmer temperatures, are particularly at risk. In fact, studies show that the Arctic sea ice is melting faster than ever! Polar bears and seals need sea ice as places to raise their young, feed, or rest.

Rising sea levels threaten the habitats of sea turtles, which depend on beaches to lay their eggs. Many people may not know that the temperature of nests determines whether the eggs are male or female. Unfortunately, rising temperatures mean that most turtles will be born females, and this may lead to population decline.

Climate change does not only have an impact on wildlife, it’s affecting us, too. Farmers, especially in developing countries, are the most affected. They are dealing with higher temperatures, heavier rainfall, floods, and droughts. Environmental conditions can also affect plant growth and crop quality. For example, in Kenya, because of climate change, rainfall is becoming heavier and less predictable. Droughts are often followed by large amounts of rain, which makes growing tea, Kenya’s most important crop, very difficult.
