In ASEAN, besides welcoming the New Year on January 1, there are several cultures that. celebrate New Year's Day later in the year. For example, Viet Nam, Singapore, Indonesia and parts of Malaysia follow the lunar calendar so their New Year festivities often take place in January or February. Lunar New Year is a time for them to honour ancestors, get together with family and friends, have a big family meal, and wish one another prosperity for the year to come. The streets and houses are decorated, and fireworks are lit to scare away bad luck. There are also parades, street parties, and art performances in the new year celebrations.

People in Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar celebrate the arrival of the New Year according to the Buddhist calendar. Their New Year's celebrations are in April. People in these countries follow traditions such as offering rice to Buddhist monks to show their respect and receiving wishes for good luck and health from them. They decorate their homes, cook traditional dishes, and splash each other with water. There are also art performances, folk games, and dancing.

In these cultures, it is believed that water will wash away bad luck and ill health from the old year and allow people to start the new year fresh.

ASEAN Student Spotlight Magazine interviewed Huy. He's a business studies graduate. He recently returned home from a year on an international study program in Bangkok.

ASSM: Welcome home Huy! How does it feel to be back?

Huy: It feels great. I had such a great time in Thailand, but I'm happy to be home and see my family.

ASSM: You spent a year studying in Thailand. Tell me about your experience.

Huy: I went there on a scholarship for an ASEAN international student program. It was such a great experience. I got to study English in a new environment. I didn't know much about Thailand before I arrived, but I learned a lot about the people and culture. Thai culture is so interesting, and I loved the food!

ASSM: What made you decide to study in an ASEAN country?

Huy: Studying in America is so expensive. I heard about the ASEAN International Student Program, and I decided to find out more. There are so many good international universities within ASEAN. Going to an ASEAN school is much cheaper, and I wasn't too far from home. The facilities are also pretty good, and my degree will help me get a good job with a good salary.

ASSM: So, do you think you would recommend the ASEAN International Student Program?

Huy: Yes. It was exciting, and I made so many new friends. I wasn't sure about living in a foreign city before I went to Thailand. Now, I feel so much more confident about myself.

Subject: ASEAN STUDENT SUMMER CAMP

I'm Sengphet, your supervisor for this year's ASEAN Student Summer Camp in Lace. I'd like to give you some information about the camp.

On the first day you'll fly to Vientiane and travel to Vang Vieng. This is where we'll stay during the camp. We'll go by bus, and it should take about four hours.

The next clay you'll meet the other camp member. Sixty ASEAN students have signed up this year. Then, we'll visit Wat Kang, a beautiful temple.  It's a short walk from our accommodation. You can see golden Buddha statues there. Later, we'll explore Tham Xang, the elephant cave. People visit to pray for good health!

On Day 3, you'll learn to cook larb, our national dish. It's a salad made with beef.  It's delicious. After that, you'll learn how to say or "hello" in our Lao language class.

Day 4 will be a day you'll never forget! We will join Boun Bang Fai, the Rocket Festival! Before the rainy season, locals fire huge rockets into the sky to encourage the rains to fall. It's incredible!

The last day will have the camp closing ceremony, and you'll return home to Vietnam.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hanoi – A Cultural Explosion!

Hello fellow travellers! I just got back from a culture-packed day tour of Hanoi. City Break was our tour company and showed us so much of what Hanoi has to offer.

Our first stop was one of the most popular tourist attractions in Hanoi, the Temple of Literature, which was Vietnam's first national university. King Lý Thánh Tông had the temple complex built in 1070 CE. I really enjoyed walking around the traditional Vietnamese architecture, beautiful gardens and lakes. The site shows how important learning and wisdom are in Vietnamese culture. The whole temple complex was a great history lesson!

Next, our guide, Trung, took us to Hanoi Botanical Garden for an escape from the crowded city. We enjoyed a picnic near a beautiful lake in the garden. The next stop was the One Pillar Pagoda for lots of pictures. Located in the middle of a peaceful pond, this traditional temple was so beautiful. Trung explained that this pagoda is a symbol of Hanoi and a place of worship. Pagodas are popular in Vietnam as they are usually important temples of worship.

Our final stop on the tour was the Old Quarter, a busy shopping area. We walked around the shops that sell handmade items at great prices. After shopping, Trung introduced us to the delicious flavours of Vietnamese street food as we tasted unusual dishes from the street stalls. This was definitely my favourite part. Make sure to go with an empty stomach, though! It was a great day and I highly recommend touring Hanoi with City Break!

Come Visit the BATU Caves of Malaysia!

Get ready to enjoy this magical place right in the heart of Malaysia. These incredible limestone caves are inside a massive hill and are the home of many Hindu temples that honour the Hindu god Lord Murugan. The Malay word batu means 'rock' and this is one huge rock! Be prepared to climb up 272 colourful steps to the top cave temple. It is like walking on a giant rainbow!

The History of the Caves

The series of caves are about 400 million years old. Local tribes once used them as shelters. In 1890, a leader of the Indian community created a temple to Lord Murugan within the caves. Today, there are many temples with statues of Hindu gods.

Meet the Monkeys!

On the way up, you may meet some new animal friends. The Batu Cave monkeys are everywhere and cheeky, and perhaps grab a snack from a friendly tourist.

The Temples

With 140 feet, the statue of the Hindu god Lord Murugan guards the entrance of the caves. Wrapped in gold with his mighty spear, the statue is quite a site! Inside the caves, there are various temples that honour Hindu gods. There is even a museum and art gallery cave full of Hindu paintings and statues. Visitors can explore the peaceful and beautifully lit caves of this magical underground world for hours.

Visitor Tips

If you plan to spend a few hours at this tourist site, don't forget plenty of suncream and comfortable walking shoes. Food and water are available outside the cave entrance.

1. The caves are on top of a very high hill.

2. In the past, the caves were homes for people.

3. The Batu Cave monkeys want food from visitors.

4. All the temples are for the god Lord Murugan.

5. Visitors to the caves don't have to bring their own water.

3. What is required if a person wants to help underprivileged children?

STUDENT B

1. What are some purposes of ASEAN mentioned in Text A?

2. What do children benefit from the joining hands of ASEAN Member States?

Text A

ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, was established in 1967. Among many purposes, it aims to facilitate the economic development and sociocultural integration of its members. Since 1990s, with the joining hands of ASEAN Member States, child poverty has dramatically decreased. There have also been advances in healthcare, access to clean water, and hygiene standards for children. More children are attending primary and secondary school and have access to technology and the Internet. Countries in the region also do their best to protect their children from violence and child abuse.

Text B

Despite recent progress in improving children's general well-being in Southeast Asia, there's a lot more you can do to help underprivileged children in this region. You can come to Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Thailand, Việt Nam, or other countries and reach out to the needy children. Helping a young child learn a new skill gives them more opportunities in the future. As a volunteer, you can help them in a variety of settings, including community centres, after-school programs, and food programs. Most programs don't require prior experience, so all you need is just a helping hand and a kind heart!

1.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was created on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, by the foreign ministers of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Brunei became a member in 1984, Viet Nam in 1995, Laos and Myanmar in 1997, and Cambodia in 1999.

2.

With nearly 700 million inhabitants, ASEAN is one of the most culturally diverse regions in the world. ASEAN is home to hundreds of different ethnic groups and a region of linguistic diversity where thousands of languages are spoken. The ASEAN has about 31 urban areas with populations of over one million. Jakarta is the largest urban area, followed by Manila, Bangkok, and Ho Chi Minh City.

3.

The main purpose of ASEAN is to promote the economic growth, social progress, and cultural development of its member countries. ASEAN also aims to maintain peace in Southeast Asia and establish friendly relationships with other countries or regional and international organisations with similar aims.

4.

ASEAN has contributed to building long-term peace, security, and prosperity in the region. It has brought all countries in Southeast Asia together and helped reduce poverty in rural areas. ASEAN is already the world’s fifth-largest economy with the third-largest labour force, and is expected to become the fourth-largest economic market by 2030. However, there are still some challenges the 10-nation organisation has to deal with to continue the success story.
