Over to You!
Teen World Magazine is doing a story on what teenagers in Vietnam like to do in their free time and asked Huy and Như about their hobbies.
Huy: I really like doing sports. My favorite sport is karate. I love doing karate. I'm a member of a club, and I'm on the high school team, too. At home, I enjoy doing crossword puzzles. My mom does a crossword every day, and we sometimes do it together. I like solving the clues before she can. I really like playing soccer with my friends, but I don't like just running. Running by yourself is just so boring! The other members of my family love playing board games, but I think that's boring, too. I think playing video games is much more fun.
Như: I enjoy doing aerobics. I go to an aerobics class on Mondays and Thursdays. A few of my friends go to the class, too. I also like playing role-playing games with my friends once or twice a week. Role-playing games are so cool! My dad loves going for a bike ride. Sometimes I go with him. He likes going fishing, too. I really don't like going fishing because there's nothing to do but sit there.
What do you like doing? And what don't you like? Write in and let us know!

1. FINDING HISTORY (tìm hiểu lịch sử)
2. WEEKEND FUN (cuối tuần vui vẻ)
January 15
Metal detecting is a great hobby for people interested in history. I first tried it after I got a metal detector for my tenth birthday. I saved up my money and bought a new one last year. Now that I have my own one, I go metal detecting every weekend.
I usually go with my friend, Adam. It's more fun to go with someone else because you have someone to talk to.
It can take hours before you find something. Last Sunday, after I spent the whole day looking, I only found an old bottle top. So, you don't always find treasure!
People think it's an expensive hobby, but I don't think so. The last metal detector I bought cost me two hundred dollars. But apart from that, you only need a cheap shovel and lots of time. Some of my friends think it's boring, but I disagree. The noise your metal detector makes when it finds something is really exciting. There's so much history under the ground. Last summer, Adam and I found a really old gold coin. It was over a thousand years old. It's in the Oregon History Museum now. That was pretty amazing.

Hello, it’s me again after another day of going canoeing ☺
This time it was at Lake Taupo. The water was beautiful, and the weather was really nice. My brother, John, went with me, and (surprise, surprise) he didn’t hate it! You know, he really doesn’t like doing any kind of exercise at all. He loves playing sports, but only on a computer ☺ I can’t understand why he likes playing computer games so much. It just sounds really boring to me.
Anyway, we went early in the morning and saw a lot of birds and fish there. The fish weren’t afraid of us and came right up to the canoe. We got really close to a pair of birds, and I took some really nice photos of them.
After hanging out on the lake, we headed back and had breakfast with the other guests at the hotel. John went back to the room to play computer games. I met a girl who was really nice and friendly. She asked me to go running in the forest by the lake that afternoon. I usually hate going running, but I didn’t have any other plans, so I went with her. The weather was really nice that day. I felt really tired afterwards, bur I had a great sleep that night. I think I’ll start running more often.

1. MARBLES COLLECTING 2. FREE TIME ACTIVITY
Have you ever heard of marble collecting? Back in the 1990s, almost every child loved marbles. My dad had a big collection when he was young. But hardly anyone enjoys collecting marbles now. Most people think it’s boring, but I don’t think so. I love collecting and playing with marbles.
Marbles are pretty cheap and usually cost 20 or 30 cents each. Some are rare and more expensive. I used to ask my dad for money to buy the rarer ones, and he wasn’t too happy about that. But now that I have a part-time job, I’ve started saving money. Every Saturday, before I go to my swimming practice, I like to stop by the toy store to see if they have any new marbles. I have so many marbles that I don’t know how many I have exactly. I think it must be over a thousand!
My little brother also likes playing with marbles. he isn’t as good as I am, but I like to let him win sometimes. He’s so happy when he wins marbles from me. Playing with marbles is so fun!

I'm training to be a professional chef, so I'm very busy. When I find time to read, I like books that help me forget about my work and studies. I love reading about the real lives of successful, famous people. I'm not really into romantic stories.

I'm a student and I don't have much time to read for pleasure. I enjoy practical books - one of my favourites is 101 Things Every Student Needs to Know. I hate books about monsters and space.
3 Nathan, 16
I love getting lost in great stories. I enjoy reading stories about the lives, love and relationships of people from the past. I like a book to make me laugh and cry, and to show me what life was like in other countries, at other times.
4 Sean, 15
I like books where the heroes are teenagers like me. I prefer stories that don't follow the rules of the real world. My favourite books have incredible people, strange aliens and amazing events. I don't like stories with romance in them.

I’m looking for a book to give my brother on his 10th birthday. He’s very imaginative and always thinks of mysterious lands with weird names. I think a fantasy book would suit him, but I don’t want it to be too dark with horrible monsters and beasts. I hope to get a book that teaches him good lessons.

2. Reorder the parts (A-E) to make a meaningful description of a film.
(Sắp xếp lại thứ tự các phần (A-E) để mô tả một bộ phim có ý nghĩa.)
A. The plot is unexpected with half laughing, half crying moments when Xi shares his innocent thoughts on modern things and people he meets on his journey to the end of the earth. It's also worth mentioning the great performance of Paddy O'Byrne as the narrator of the film. Besides, the soundtrack is superb with peaceful melodies to describe nature.
B. “The Gods must be crazy" is a 1980 comedy film directed by Jamie Uys.
C. Set in Botswana, Southern Africa, the story begins when a Coke bottle thrown from a passing plane falls unbroken near Xi's village. This "gift from the Gods" soon becomes favoured by the tribesmen for its various uses. Soon afterwards, the tribesmen fight over it. Since it brings unhappiness, Xi is chosen to take the bottle to "the end of the earth" and throw it back to the Gods. Meanwhile, Kate leaves the city to become a teacher for Kalahari children, meeting Steyn, a clumsy scientist in the desert. Kate and her students are later kept as hostages by a guerrilla band. This is when the film gets extremely thrilling with action-packed scenes where Xi and Steyn try to rescue the hostages.
D. For me, the word that best describes the film is awesome. It's one of the best comedy films I've ever seen, and in my view, it's perfect for families to watch together.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Reading to oneself is a modern activity which was almost unknown to the scholars of the classical and medieval worlds, while during the fifteenth century the term “reading” undoubtedly meant reading aloud. Only during the nineteenth century did silent reading become commonplace.
One should be wary, however, of assuming that silent reading came about simply because reading aloud was a distraction to others. Examinations of factors related to the historical development of silent reading have revealed that it became the usual mode of reading for most adults mainly because the tasks themselves changed in character.
The last century saw a steady gradual increase in literacy and thus in the number of readers. As the number of readers increased, the number of potential listeners declined and thus there was some reduction in the need to read aloud. As reading for the benefit of listeners grew less common, came the flourishing of reading as a private activity in such public places as libraries, railway carriages and offices, where reading aloud would cause distraction to other readers.
Towards the end of the century, there was still considerable argument over whether books should be used for information or treated respectfully and over whether the reading of materials such as newspapers was in some way mentally weakening. Indeed, this argument remains with us still in education. However, whatever its virtues, the old shared literacy culture had gone and were replaced by the printed mass media on the one hand and by books and periodicals for a specialized readership on the other.
By the end of the twentieth century, students were being recommended to adopt attitudes to books and to use reading skills which were inappropriate, if not impossible, for the oral reader. The social, cultural and technological changes in the century had greatly altered what the term “reading” implied.
