Tom: We took pictures of the magnificent scenery, It was really enjoyable!

Mi: Then did you explore Cu Lan Village?

Tom: Yes. We had a brilliant tour around the village. We also rode horses and a jeep along a stream.

Tom:  It definitely was. In the evening, we saw an interesting gong show. We danced and sang with the locals. And we tried grilled pork. It was a really memorable evening. I'll show you some pictures I took there.

One weekend, my family and I decided to go on a picnic at a nearby park. We packed a delicious spread of sandwiches, fruits, and snacks, and set off with excitement. However, things did not go as planned. As soon as we arrived at the park, we realised that it was overcrowded with noisy groups and there were no available picnic tables. After we walked around for a while to search for a spot, we finally found a small patch of grass under a tree and decided to make do with it. When we started unpacking our food, we noticed that there were swarms of mosquitoes buzzing around, making it impossible to enjoy our meal in peace. We tried to ward them off with mosquito repellent, but it was hopeless. To make matters worse, the weather suddenly turned hot. We didn’t realise that we had forgotten to bring extra water until we were all sweating uncomfortably. We decided to pack up and leave earlier than planned, disappointed and frustrated with our outing. Despite our great efforts, it turned out to be our unpleasant picnicking experience, but we learned the importance of planning ahead and being prepared for unexpected challenges during outdoor activities.

It’s the start of a new school year. Everyone’s getting back into their ‘normal’ routine, so it seems like a good time to challenge yourself.

Here’s a simple idea. Why not surprise yourself and change / make your daily routine? You could travel a different way to school. You never know – you might have / make an adventure! Why not eat your meals in a different place or get up early and do some yoga? Our brains have / get a buzz out of change, so it helps you to enjoy your day and focus on what you’re doing. I love making videos, but I was always too shy to share them. Then last month I made myself post my work online. Now people like to comment, give / get their opinions and criticise, but I don’t mind. Good comments make / boost my confidence, but I try to take / get on board negative comments too.

Fitting in 

Linh grew up in a small village, surrounded by rice paddies and lush green hills in Việt Nam. Life was simple, but she always dreamed of the bright lights of the big city. When she turned 15, her family decided to move to Hồ Chí Minh City. Moving to the city was overwhelming at first. The traffic was chaotic, and the constant noise made it hard to sleep at night. But Linh was determined to have an adventure. She found her new teachers and friends very friendly. They quickly became her new family. As she explored the city, Linh discovered new foods and cultures. She visited museums and art galleries, and even tried to take up street photography. But the city was also full of challenges, and Linh, like her parents, struggled to adapt to the fast-paced lifestyle, expensive transportation and crowdedness. Despite the ups and downs, Linh never regretted her family’s decision to move to the city. She has found a new sense of independence and freedom, and was excited for all the opportunities in this new environment. Even though she sometimes missed the simplicity of her village life, she knew that this is where her heart belongs.

In 2014, thirteen-year-old Malavath Poorna became the youngest girl to climb Mount Everest. She was living in a village in the countryside with her parents when a government organisation chose her and a friend for the mountain challenge. She flew for the first time in her life to a special mountain centre where she trained for eight months. The training was hard and sometimes the temperature dropped as low as -35°C. Malavath also hated the packaged food that she had to eat. It didn’t smell nice and she missed her mum’s cooking! The climb lasted fifty-two days. At times it was dangerous and they had to walk very slowly, but Malavath didn’t give up. When she finally raised India’s flag on the highest peak in the world, she said she felt great and very proud of herself.

Why do millions of people love roller coasters? The answer is that people love feeling afraid when they know they’re in no real danger. But Jane Clark has never been on a roller coaster. She is frightened of heights and speed. ‘It’s ridiculous. All my friends have ridden on roller coasters, and they love it,’ says Jane. ‘I’ve always wanted to try, but I’ve never been brave enough.’ Well, Jane has decided that today this is going to change. She has bought a ticket for Oblivion and her friends are here to support her. Her heart is beating and she can’t speak as she gets in. Then they’re off. People are screaming because they’re scared, or is it because they’re excited? She screams, too. Three minutes later, it’s all over. Jane is happy. She’s done it! She’s been on her first roller coaster. ‘Words can’t describe it!’ she says.

But for some people, roller coaster phobia never goes away. Psychologist Frank Farley believes that there are two types of people when it comes to fear and risk. Some people prefer the quiet life. For others, danger and excitement make them feel alive. Their brains produce ‘feel-good’ chemicals risky situations, and they love extreme sports like climbing or paragliding. Roller coasters are great for these people because they can get the excitement without the danger. The chance of a fatal accident is one in 50 billion. Driving to the amusement park is more dangerous than riding on a ‘scream machine’!

I went to Singapore on my own for a ten-day summer course. There were about 15 students from China, Malaysia, Cambodia, India, and Iran in the course. We were all so surprised about the cleanliness and discipline of the country. On the second day of the course, we had special team-building activities. We worked in groups of five from different countries to search for a location on a map that the school staff gave us. The time we spent doing the activity together was really memorable. We discussed how to find the place. After four hours of walking, taking the bus and metro as well as getting lost, we arrived at the destination. Over the remaining days, we attended English lessons. We worked on projects and culture workshops. We discussed and shared our own traditions and customs. During the time here, we also visited the Botanic Gardens, took photos in the orchard garden and explored Chinatown where we bought souvenirs for our parents and friends. At the weekend, we went to the Discovery Centre. We were impressed by the attraction and interactive gallery as well as the brilliant learning experiences we had. After the trip, I felt proud of myself for being able to go without my parents and leaving my comfort zone.

We went camping at Ba Vi National Park, 60 kilometres to the west of Ha Noi. Our teacher chose this location as it is not far from Ha Noi and is famous as a mountainous ecological tourism centre. It is home to hundreds of wildlife species, so we had a chance to get into a real natural habitat.

We went there on a coach. We set off early and because the road was a bit bumpy and tricky, we were tired when we arrived. After about two hours, we finally reached the campsite in Ngoc Hoa cave area. We set up our camps before exploring the park. We explored the rich nature in the Botanical Garden, trying to take deep breaths of the fresh air and enjoying the diversity of the flora there. We took photos of the places we saw. At night, we burnt wood for a campfire. We sat around the fire and sang and danced. We also had team- building activities, which were exciting and memorable. On the next day, we went trekking to Thuong Temple - a national cultural monument at Tan Vien Peak. We learnt much about the culture associated with the legend Son Tinh and Thuy Tinh from our guide.

We tried lam rice, hill chicken and milk products - the specialities of the area. We were so impressed by the trip’s activities, scenery and the food of the area.
